Los Angeles 2028 Olympics organizing committee chairman, Casey Wasserman, has apologized for exchanging emails with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell more than two decades ago, while firmly denying any personal or business relationship with late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Wasserman’s apology followed the release of new files by the United States Department of Justice, which included personal email exchanges between him and Maxwell dating back to 2003. The emails were made public as part of documents linked to investigations involving Epstein.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Wasserman said he deeply regretted the correspondence, stressing that it occurred long before the crimes associated with Maxwell and Epstein became publicly known.

He stated that he never had any personal or business dealings with Epstein, noting that his only connection was a humanitarian trip in 2002 as part of a Clinton Foundation delegation, during which he travelled on Epstein’s plane.

“I am terribly sorry for having any association with either of them,” Wasserman said.

Maxwell, a British socialite and Epstein’s former partner, is currently serving a 20 year prison sentence after being convicted in 2021 on multiple charges, including sex trafficking of a minor. She was arrested in 2020, accused by federal prosecutors of recruiting and grooming underage girls for Epstein between 1994 and 2004.

Epstein died in a United States jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Wasserman, a prominent sports and entertainment executive, has led the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic project from its bidding stage and currently serves as chairman of the organising committee. The 2028 Summer Olympics were officially awarded to Los Angeles in 2017.

He reiterated his commitment to the Olympic movement and said he took full responsibility for what he described as a regrettable lapse in judgment in maintaining correspondence with Maxwell.

The development has drawn public attention as preparations continue toward hosting the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
