The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one of its officers, Inspector Victor Okus, over the shooting of two fellow policemen at a popular supermarket in Port Harcourt on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred while the affected officers, attached to the 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel in the state.

In a statement issued on Monday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, identified the victims as Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda.

According to the statement, the officers were shot in the head and neck, respectively, at about 1:20 p.m. at the Next Cash and Carry Supermarket, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt.

Iringe-Koko said the injured officers were immediately rushed to Nopsam Hospital for medical attention, where Inspector Sani later died from his injuries.

His remains have been deposited at the Military Hospital mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.

Inspector Dauda, who sustained gunshot wounds, is currently receiving medical treatment.

The command disclosed that the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, attached to the 17 PMF but on special duty at Intels, Onne, has been arrested, currently in police custody.

“The suspect will be subjected to an orderly room trial, will be subsequently charged in court to ensure justice is served,” the statement said.

The police said preliminary investigations, based on the account of the Unit Commander of 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan, indicated that Inspector Okus allegedly shot his colleagues during the joint security assignment.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, ordered a comprehensive, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding what he described as a “reprehensible act.”

Adepoju warned officers that the handling of firearms while on duty is a serious responsibility and not a routine task, stressing the need for strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies.

The Rivers State Police Command expressed its condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the late Inspector Ibrahim Sani, while reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, discipline and accountability within the force.
