Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, have commended the Super Eagles for their performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite their semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco.
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the final ended on Wednesday after the Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time and extra time.
Reacting on Thursday via his X handle, Obi praised the players for their resilience, discipline and commitment, urging them to remain focused ahead of the third-place playoff.
“Dearest gallant Super Eagles, it was a battle well fought, heads were not bowed. Thank you for a beautiful 120 minutes of incredible play. You showed your strength and prowess against all odds,” Obi wrote.
He added that the team had made the nation proud and encouraged them to push for a podium finish.
“The journey is not over. You have made the nation proud. Keep your heads high, the Eagle never stops soaring. There is another stage, let’s go get that medal. You have done well,” he said.
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, also praised the Super Eagles in a Facebook post on Wednesday, describing their performance as commendable against a strong and determined host side.
Nigeria will now face the Pharaohs of Egypt in the third-place match scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m.
In the final, Senegal will take on hosts Morocco on Sunday after edging Egypt 1–0 in the other semi-final played on Wednesday.
