Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to withdraw the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency One, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency Two, made the appeal on Wednesday, barely twenty-four hours after two other legislators publicly called for a suspension of the impeachment move.
Their appeal follows the January 8 notice of impeachment against the Governor, which accused him of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, and alleged defiance of a Supreme Court ruling on legislative autonomy.
Although the two lawmakers acknowledged that constitutional breaches were alleged against the Governor and his deputy, they said their decision to seek a withdrawal of the impeachment process was influenced by interventions from elders and well-meaning leaders in Rivers State.
Earlier, two other lawmakers had also withdrawn their support for the impeachment plot, urging the Assembly to pursue dialogue and other peaceful means to resolve the political crisis.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt, the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo, who represents Omuma State Constituency, called on members to exercise restraint and temper justice with mercy.
He said the appeal was prompted by sustained pleas from leaders within and outside the state, urging the lawmakers to consider the overall interest of Rivers people.
With the latest development, four out of the 26 lawmakers who signed the notice of alleged misconduct have now publicly expressed support for a peaceful resolution of the impasse.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to resume plenary on January 15, as political watchers await the next line of action on the impeachment process.
