Spanish football giants, Real Madrid, have sacked their manager, Xabi Alonso, hours after the club’s 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the final of the King Super Cup held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.
The club announced the decision in a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Monday.
According to the statement, the decision to part ways with Alonso was reached by mutual agreement.
“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach,” the statement read.
The club paid tribute to the former midfielder, describing him as a club legend who embodied Real Madrid’s values throughout his career.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend, has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the statement added.
Real Madrid also thanked Alonso and his technical crew for their commitments and services, wishing them success in their future endeavours.
“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”
