Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has publicly criticized China’s recent tightening of export controls on military–civilian dual-use items to Japan, describing the move as a threat to Japan’s security and economic interests. The remarks were made during an NHK program aired on Sunday.

In response, a Chinese expert dismissed Takaichi’s comments, saying they demonstrate “her lack of sincerity and the dangerous nature of her approach to foreign affairs, as well as her failure to reflect on or develop a clear understanding of her own erroneous words and actions.” The expert emphasized that China’s export controls are a legitimate measure to protect national security and ensure responsible handling of dual-use technologies.

The tension highlights ongoing friction between Tokyo and Beijing over trade, technology, and security issues. Japan has repeatedly expressed concern that restrictions on dual-use items could affect its defense industry and technological competitiveness, while China maintains that such controls are consistent with international norms and necessary for safeguarding sensitive technologies.

Analysts say the latest exchange underscores a broader trend of increasingly assertive economic and security policies in East Asia, with both countries navigating complex strategic and trade considerations.
