Colombian President Gustavo Petro has vowed to defend his country against any foreign military intervention, warning that Colombia would resist any violent action against its sovereignty.

Speaking on Monday, Petro said he would take up arms if necessary to defend the homeland, following recent threats issued by the United States against his government.

He described such threats as an undue interference in Colombia’s internal affairs, a violation of international law.

The President’s comments followed statements from United States President, Donald Trump suggesting possible military action against Colombia in the name of combating drug trafficking.

Petro rejected the allegations, stating that his administration has worked to reduce drug production, while moving away from a militarized approach to security.

Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally condemned the remarks, describing them as unacceptable and contrary to established international norms, governing relations between sovereign states.

Petro said he has confidence in the Colombian people, urged them to remain vigilant against any illegitimate or violent actions directed at the country’s leadership.

Tensions between Washington and Bogotá have escalated in recent days, raising concerns about regional stability, the potential consequences of further diplomatic or military confrontation.
