New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sharply criticized the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, describing the development as an “act of war” , a dangerous escalation in international affairs.

In a post shared on X, the mayor accused external actors of engaging in a blatant pursuit of regime change, warning that such actions carry far reaching consequences beyond Venezuela’s borders.

Mamdani stressed that the implications of the move would not only affect people within the South American nation, but also resonate deeply among tens of thousands of Venezuelans living in New York City.

According to the Mayor, aggressive foreign interventions undermine international norms and place vulnerable diaspora communities at heightened risk of instability, fear and uncertainty. He noted that Venezuelans in New York maintain close personal, economic and emotional ties to their homeland, making developments of this nature deeply personal for many residents of the city.

Mamdani further cautioned that actions perceived as forced regime change could inflame global tensions, set a dangerous precedent in international relations. He urged restraint, respect for sovereignty and renewed commitment to diplomatic engagement, rather than coercive measures.

The comments have sparked renewed debate on the global fallout of foreign interventions, the role of major cities with large immigrant populations in responding to international crises that directly affect their residents.
