Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been hospitalized following a road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in the Makun area of Ogun State.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Monday, near the Danco Filling Station, ahead of the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound axis.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said Joshua and other injured persons were involved in the crash and were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.
“Ogun State Police Command confirms a road accident today in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Anthony Joshua and other injured persons have been rushed to the hospital. Further updates will be communicated,” Oluseyi said in a statement.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the accident involved a Lexus Jeep, with registration number KRD 850 HN, conveying Joshua, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck.
According to an eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, the convoy consisted of two vehicles, a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV, while Joshua was seated in the back of the Lexus.
“Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. A passenger sat beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed, while his security detail followed in the vehicle behind,” Orojo said.
He added that Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the Lexus died at the scene.
“Other eyewitnesses and I immediately commenced rescue efforts and flagged down oncoming vehicles for assistance. Federal Road Safety Corps officials arrived minutes later.
Sadly, the passenger beside the driver and the person sitting next to Joshua died on the spot,” he said.
Emergency responders, including officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were later seen at the scene managing the situation and clearing traffic.
As of press time, details of the condition of Joshua and other injured persons remained sketchy, while authorities said investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing.
