Turkish authorities have arrested 115 suspected members of the Islamic State group over alleged plans to carry out attacks during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The arrests were confirmed on Thursday by the Istanbul Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to a statement, the operation followed intelligence reports indicating that the Islamic State terrorist organization was planning attacks during the end-of-year celebrations.
Based on the intelligence, prosecutors ordered the detention of one hundred and thirty-seven suspects, leading to the arrest of one hundred and fifteen of them.
The statement did not provide further details on the planned attacks or the locations targeted.
Turkey shares a nine-hundred-kilometre border with Syria, where jihadist groups remain active.
The Islamic State was recently accused of carrying out an attack in mid-December in Syria, which reportedly claimed the lives of two United States soldiers and a civilian.
Turkish authorities say counter-terrorism operations will continue to ensure public safety during the festive period.
