The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has renewed his commitment to revitalising Calabar Port and restoring Cross River State’s tourism industry as part of his economic development proposals ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi reportedly pledged during a town hall meeting held in Calabar on Wednesday, November 4, where he engaged residents, political stakeholders and supporters on infrastructure, security, employment and economic development.
The former Anambra State governor attended the event alongside his running mate, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Before the engagement, both politicians paid a courtesy visit to the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, who received the delegation at his palace.
During the town hall, Obi reportedly assured participants that his administration would prioritise making Calabar Port fully operational alongside other maritime facilities across the Niger Delta.
He maintained that improving port operations would strengthen commercial activities, expand economic opportunities and support regional development.
The pledge reflects his earlier commitment to upgrading Niger Delta ports, including facilities in Warri, Port Harcourt and Calabar.
Obi also expressed his intention to revitalise Cross River’s tourism industry, particularly established destinations such as Calabar and Obudu, which have historically attracted domestic and international visitors.
He reportedly pledged to support tourism development through improved infrastructure, security and policies designed to attract investment.
Addressing broader national concerns, Obi said his proposed administration would prioritise national unity, tackling insecurity, fighting corruption and investing in education and healthcare.

He argued that Nigeria needed stronger institutions, improved public services and economic policies capable of expanding employment opportunities and reducing poverty.
The NDC presidential candidate also encouraged political participation and urged supporters to remain committed to peaceful and credible elections.
His visit followed engagements with party candidates in Lagos after returning from a brief trip to the United States.
The Calabar meeting formed part of the NDC’s nationwide consultations aimed at presenting its policy proposals and receiving feedback from communities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi maintained that sustained investment in infrastructure, human development and productive economic activities would remain central to his proposed national development agenda.
