Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his decision to retire from international football after more than two decades representing his country, bringing one of the most decorated international careers in football history towards its conclusion.

The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a statement shared on social media, revealing that he intends to end his international career after the November international break.

Ronaldo said he would hand back Portugal’s famous number seven jersey, signalling his decision to conclude a remarkable journey that began with his senior national team debut in August 2003.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has made 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals and establishing himself as the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football.

He also holds the record for the most appearances in men’s international football, having represented Portugal at six FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Ronaldo captained Portugal to victory at the 2016 UEFA European Championship, the country’s first major international trophy, and subsequently helped the national team win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

His retirement announcement follows a difficult period involving Portugal’s national team management.

The Al-Nassr forward recently became involved in a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over playing opportunities during the UEFA Nations League campaign.

Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp and was handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation.

Although he later apologised and expressed a desire to continue representing Portugal, he has now decided to conclude his international career.

The Portuguese captain had previously confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament, although he initially left open the possibility of continuing international football.

His announcement comes ahead of Portugal’s scheduled Nations League fixtures against Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17.

It remains unclear whether Ronaldo will feature in either fixture before formally ending his international career.

Despite retiring from international duty, Ronaldo has not announced his immediate retirement from professional club football.

The forward remains contracted to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, where he continues pursuing further milestones in his illustrious career.

His departure will mark the end of an era for Portuguese football following more than 23 years of international service.
