Seplat Energy has urged journalists in Akwa Ibom State to embrace digital technology, entrepreneurship and content creation as opportunities to generate additional income and achieve long-term financial security.

The company’s General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mr Ogechukwu Udeagha, made the call during a two-day Seplat Media Partners Career and Capacity Development Programme held at CEEDAPEG Hotel, Uyo.

The programme brought together more than 50 journalists for training in digital marketing, artificial intelligence, content creation, smartphone video production and leadership development.

Udeagha said journalists should look beyond conventional newsroom responsibilities and explore opportunities arising from the changing media environment.

According to him, the growth of digital platforms has created new possibilities for media professionals to develop businesses, reach wider audiences and earn income from their expertise.

He encouraged participants to leverage their storytelling abilities, professional networks and industry knowledge to explore opportunities in digital content production, consultancy, public relations and other legitimate ventures.

The Seplat official also emphasised financial planning, urging journalists to consider their economic security beyond their active working years.

He explained that entrepreneurship did not necessarily require media professionals to abandon journalism but could complement their careers and strengthen their financial independence.

Speaking during the programme, political economist Professor Pat Utomi commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for what he described as significant investment in road infrastructure.

Utomi urged journalists to pay greater attention to leadership, public service, human capital development and the institutions responsible for sustainable development.

He maintained that infrastructure investment should be accompanied by policies that strengthen accountability, economic opportunities and institutional effectiveness.

The professor also encouraged citizens to assess the performance of their governments and demand improvements in public service delivery.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, described the training as an important contribution to professional development.

John said the programme aligned with the union’s commitment to strengthening the skills and capacity of journalists across the state.

He thanked Seplat Energy for organising the workshop and urged participants to apply the knowledge acquired to improve their professional performance.

The NUJ chairman also encouraged journalists to explore creative and responsible income-generating opportunities without compromising their professional responsibilities.

The training formed part of Seplat Energy’s broader media development initiatives aimed at equipping journalists with relevant skills for the evolving digital economy.
