Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappé has apologised to the Chinese people following widespread criticism of his remarks about an internet meme depicting him as former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
The controversy prompted three major Chinese companies to terminate their commercial partnerships with the football star, raising concerns about the impact on his endorsement deals in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
Mbappé issued the apology on Tuesday after a video circulated online showing him discussing a meme in which his face had been superimposed onto an image resembling Mao, the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China.

In the recording, the French international appeared to describe the historical figure as a Chinese dictator while discussing humorous images of himself shared online.
Responding to the backlash, Mbappé acknowledged that his remarks had caused offence and expressed regret.
He described the comment as ill-judged, saying he understood that it had hurt people in China and Chinese communities worldwide.
The 27-year-old footballer also emphasised his respect for Chinese people and their history, maintaining that causing offence had not been his intention.
Following the video’s circulation, Chinese beverage manufacturer Dongpeng, dairy producer Mengniu and cheesemaker Milkground announced the termination of their commercial relationships with Mbappé.
The companies said their decisions reflected opposition to statements or actions considered offensive to Chinese national sentiments.
The controversy generated widespread discussion on Chinese social media platforms, including Weibo, where criticism of the footballer’s remarks attracted considerable attention.
Chinese authorities also addressed the issue, with the Foreign Ministry acknowledging public opposition to comments considered disrespectful.
Meanwhile, reports emerged that Chinese state broadcaster CCTV had suspended coverage of Spanish La Liga matches, although the scope and duration of any broadcast restrictions remained unclear.

The incident highlights the commercial consequences international sporting figures can face when remarks involving politically sensitive historical subjects provoke controversy.
Mao Zedong remains a prominent historical figure in China, where public discussions about his legacy can generate strong reactions.
Mbappé’s apology came shortly after the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, where he lost the men’s award to England striker Harry Kane.
Although the French forward has publicly expressed regret, the three Chinese companies have not announced any reversal of their decisions to end their partnerships.
The development has attracted international attention, illustrating the growing intersection of professional football, commercial endorsements and cultural sensitivities.
