The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has raised concerns over an alleged plot by individuals linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilise its leadership, create internal divisions and weaken efforts to form a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the allegation in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, warning that attempts were allegedly underway to compromise party officials and undermine its political structures.

According to Baba-Ahmed, those behind the suspected scheme were prepared to spend hundreds of millions of naira to influence party members, encourage factional activities and weaken grassroots mobilisation.

He alleged that some former members were being used to create the impression of internal divisions, while serving officials were being approached to participate in activities capable of disrupting the party.

The PRP chairman also raised concerns over alleged attempts by unauthorised individuals to recruit polling agents in the party’s name.

He urged members to reject such approaches and report any financial inducements intended to compromise their loyalty.

Baba-Ahmed warned that serving party officials found participating in unauthorised activities or attempts to undermine the party would face disciplinary measures.

He maintained that the PRP would not abandon its political commitments or compromise the interests of its candidates and supporters in exchange for financial benefits.

The national chairman further accused unnamed individuals within the governing party of attempting to establish a rival faction using financial resources and political influence.

However, the statement did not identify the individuals allegedly involved or provide publicly verifiable evidence establishing the claimed financial inducements.

The allegations come amid intensified negotiations among opposition parties seeking to develop a common political platform ahead of the next presidential election.

Baba-Ahmed reaffirmed the PRP’s participation in discussions aimed at building an opposition coalition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He said the party remained committed to protecting its organisational structures and ensuring that internal disagreements did not undermine its participation in the electoral process.

The PRP has previously experienced disputes over its leadership, although the Independent National Electoral Commission recognised Baba-Ahmed as its national chairman following the party’s convention earlier in 2026.

As of publication, the APC had not been shown to have responded specifically to the latest allegations.

The claims remain unproven, and no independent investigation establishing the alleged plot has been reported.
