The Senate has officially declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant following the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The declaration was made on Tuesday during plenary by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who said the decision takes immediate effect in line with constitutional provisions.

Akpabio subsequently directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election to fill the vacant seat within 30 days.
Under the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Senate is required to formally notify INEC whenever a legislative seat becomes vacant, triggering the process for a fresh election.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, a businessman and politician, represented Ondo South on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before his recent diplomatic appointment to the United Nations.
