The G100 coalition of opposition political parties has intensified consultations aimed at strengthening political cooperation and exploring the possibility of presenting a common presidential candidate ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The coalition announced further steps towards consolidating its activities on Wednesday in Abuja, during the inauguration of its Legal and Media Committees.

Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, said discussions among participating political parties and presidential hopefuls were progressing.

The coalition brings together representatives of six opposition parties, including the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

According to Gombe, consultations are ongoing with prominent political figures as part of efforts to develop a framework for cooperation ahead of the presidential election.

Among those previously engaged in the discussions are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke and former presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo.

The coalition is seeking to address differences among opposition parties and establish common principles for political engagement.

Gombe explained that the newly inaugurated Legal Committee would examine relevant constitutional provisions, electoral legislation and judicial decisions to ensure that any agreement reached by participating parties complies with Nigerian law.

The committee, comprising legal representatives of the participating parties, is also expected to identify possible legal obstacles that could affect the proposed arrangements.

Similarly, the Media and Publicity Committee will coordinate public communication, provide updates on the consultations and promote consistency in the coalition’s activities.

The SDP chairman said the initiative was motivated by concerns about economic hardship, insecurity and the need for greater cooperation among opposition parties.

He urged political leaders to prioritise collective agreements over individual ambitions while negotiations continued.

However, the participating parties have not announced a final agreement on a consensus presidential candidate.

The ADC had earlier clarified that its involvement in the G100 consultations primarily concerned electoral cooperation and the protection of votes, rather than a binding decision to adopt a single presidential flagbearer.

The clarification highlights differences in the expectations of participating parties as discussions continue.

The G100 initiative emerged from an opposition summit held in Abuja on August 31, where representatives of several political parties discussed cooperation and a proposed four-year transitional government framework.

The latest committee inaugurations represent another organisational step in that process.

Further negotiations are expected as participating parties work towards determining the extent of their cooperation before the 2027 presidential election.
