The Anambra State Police Command has announced that security operatives foiled a suspected kidnapping attempt along the Ogbakuba–Ossomala Road in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.

The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, when armed men allegedly blocked the road and began shooting indiscriminately, threatening the safety of motorists and other road users.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to Ikenga, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects, who were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles, attempted to intercept vehicles travelling along the road.

He explained that the timely intervention of a joint security team disrupted the attackers’ activities before they could carry out the suspected abduction.

The operatives were reportedly conducting offensive security operations in the area when they responded to the incident.

Police authorities said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to tackle armed criminal activities and suspected violent secessionist groups operating within the area.

Ikenga maintained that the swift response prevented the suspected kidnappers from achieving their objective and helped restore security along the affected route.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the personnel involved for their prompt intervention and professionalism.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing, coordinated security operations and sustained efforts to dismantle criminal networks threatening public safety.

The commissioner also assured residents that security patrols and other operational activities would continue in the affected communities to prevent further attacks.

He urged motorists and residents to remain vigilant, particularly when travelling through isolated roads, and to promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.

The police further appealed for public cooperation, stressing that timely information from residents would help security personnel respond effectively to emerging threats.

Although the command confirmed that the suspected kidnapping attempt was disrupted, it did not disclose any arrests, casualties or recoveries arising from the incident.

The police said further information would be provided as investigations and security operations continued.
