A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Princewill Dike, has praised the political strategy of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, describing him as the “political Chike Obi of Rivers State.”

Dike, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer and political commentator, made the remarks on Tuesday while assessing Wike’s political activities and the renewed reconciliation efforts involving Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He said Wike had demonstrated an ability to navigate political disagreements, build alliances and influence major political developments in the state.

According to Dike, his comparison of Wike with renowned Nigerian mathematician Chike Obi reflects what he considers the minister’s ability to make complex political calculations and adjust his strategies to changing circumstances.

Recalling events preceding the 2015 Rivers governorship election, Dike referred to a television appearance by former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Odein Ajumogobia, in 2014.

He claimed that Ajumogobia had expressed interest in contesting the governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with expectations that Wike would support his ambition.

Dike said Ajumogobia subsequently withdrew from the race following Wike’s declaration of interest, an episode he cited as an illustration of the former governor’s political influence.

He also recalled Wike’s victory in the 2015 governorship election against the political camp of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, saying the outcome strengthened his assessment of Wike’s political strategy.

The APC chieftain’s latest comments followed renewed engagements between Wike, Fubara and their supporters after a prolonged political disagreement that divided major stakeholders in Rivers State.

Dike welcomed the reconciliation efforts, expressing optimism that improved relations between the rival camps could create opportunities for greater political cooperation.

He attributed Wike’s continued influence partly to his ability to maintain political relationships and reconcile with former associates following disagreements.

Dike, who has previously advocated reconciliation between the camps, expressed satisfaction with the latest developments.

“The development is the beginning of a new political chapter in Rivers State. The apparent rapprochement has given me reasons to celebrate. Rivers State is now moving towards becoming one political family,” he said.

The lawyer urged political stakeholders to build on the ongoing engagements and promote cooperation in the interest of the state.

Meanwhile, the reconciliation efforts have continued to attract public attention ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly following meetings involving Wike, Fubara, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and local government chairmen.

Although the engagements represent renewed dialogue between the political camps, the long-term implications for political alliances and governance in Rivers State remain uncertain.
