The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has launched a nationwide mobilisation campaign aimed at facilitating the participation of at least 10 million Nigerian students in the 2027 general elections.

The association has constituted a National Election Mobilisation Committee to coordinate voter sensitisation and mobilisation across tertiary institutions and monitor students’ participation in election-related activities nationwide.

NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, announced the initiative in a statement, describing Nigerian students as an important constituency in the country’s democratic process.

The association said its large student membership made it necessary to encourage young Nigerians to take an active and informed role in elections rather than remain politically disengaged.

NANS said the campaign would focus on responsible participation in the electoral process and would operate through structures established across the six geopolitical zones, the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Under the arrangement, Afeez will serve as Director-General of the National Election Mobilisation Committee, while the NANS Senate President will serve as Deputy Director.

Olusola Oladoja was named National Coordinator, Gambo Abubakar as Deputy Coordinator and Charles Obina Ebube as National Public Relations Officer.

Agbabiaka Ahmed will chair the Advisory Committee for the South, while Ibrahim G. Ibrahim Babalolo will head the Northern Advisory Committee.

NANS said the committee would work with existing student structures, including student unions and other stakeholders, to conduct sensitisation and mobilisation activities across campuses.

The association stressed that the initiative was intended to promote students’ participation in the electoral process and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any political party or candidate.

Political organisations and election-related groups seeking to engage Nigerian students were also directed to liaise with the committee to ensure proper coordination.

“Our target is to facilitate the participation of at least 10 million Nigerian students in the 2027 General Elections,” the association said.

Afeez urged members of the committee to carry out their responsibilities efficiently and ensure that the mobilisation exercise promotes peaceful, informed and responsible participation in the democratic process.
