The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has claimed that no former governor in Nigeria has matched his record of financial savings during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Obi asserted during a town hall meeting with supporters in the United Kingdom on Sunday, October 18, while calling on Nigerians to prioritise competence, accountability and prudent management of public resources ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Anambra governor said Nigeria’s economic difficulties required a fundamental change in leadership, arguing that citizens should support candidates with demonstrable records of performance rather than political promises.

Addressing Nigerians in the diaspora, Obi urged them to encourage relatives and friends experiencing financial hardship at home to demand better governance through their votes.

He suggested that Nigerians should focus on electing leaders capable of addressing the economic conditions that have left many households dependent on financial assistance from relatives abroad.

Defending his record in public office, Obi acknowledged that he was not perfect but maintained that his financial management achievements distinguished him from other former governors.

He challenged his counterparts to demonstrate comparable savings during their respective administrations.

Obi, who governed Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, has repeatedly claimed that he left approximately $150 million in savings when he completed his tenure.

However, the claim has generated controversy, with the current Anambra State Government questioning aspects of his financial record, including liabilities associated with projects undertaken during his administration.

Although the state government has acknowledged the existence of the reported savings, it has challenged Obi’s broader presentation of his fiscal legacy and argued that government performance should also be measured by public investment and improvements in citizens’ welfare.

Obi has rejected allegations that he misrepresented the state’s financial position.

During the UK engagement, the NDC presidential candidate reiterated his vision of building a country where corruption is confronted, and public resources are directed towards productive economic activities.

He maintained that Nigeria’s development depended on electing leaders with competence, character, compassion and commitment to national unity.

His latest remarks come as political debate intensifies over the records and policy proposals of candidates seeking the presidency in 2027.
