The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions against issuing documents that purport to replace its official admission letters, insisting that only the board is authorised to issue recognised admission letters in Nigeria.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, issued the warning while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to the board’s headquarters.

Aina expressed concern that some institutions were issuing admission documents that candidates mistakenly regarded as sufficient proof of admission, even when the admissions had not been properly processed through JAMB.

He explained that although tertiary institutions participate in selecting and recommending qualified candidates, their admission offers must be processed and recognised through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

According to the registrar, an admission letter issued independently by an institution cannot replace the official document generated by JAMB after a candidate accepts an approved admission offer.

He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed tertiary institutions to conduct admissions through CAPS, warning that admissions processed outside the approved system would not be recognised.

Aina stressed that compliance with the platform was necessary to protect candidates from irregular admissions and prevent difficulties arising from discrepancies in their academic records.

The registrar also highlighted the implications for graduates seeking mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He explained that admissions not properly recognised through JAMB could create obstacles during mobilisation and other official verification processes.

The warning reinforces the board’s position that institutions must comply with the established admission procedures rather than rely solely on their internal documentation.

CAPS was introduced to improve transparency, coordinate admissions and provide a central platform through which candidates can monitor and accept admission offers.

Under the process, institutions recommend candidates for admission, while candidates are required to confirm their offers through the approved platform.

JAMB subsequently makes official admission letters available through its e-Facility portal.

Prospective students have therefore been advised to verify their admission status through JAMB and obtain the appropriate official documents before relying on any admission offer.

The board maintained that strict adherence to CAPS remains essential to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s tertiary admission system.
