Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has publicly apologised for his criticism of the club’s leadership following the team’s 2–0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.

The Argentine international confirmed that he held discussions with manager Michael Carrick and senior club officials on Thursday, describing the meeting as positive and an opportunity to address the controversy surrounding his earlier remarks.

Martínez had criticised United’s sporting director, Jason Wilcox, and other senior officials over the club’s summer transfer activities and disappointing start to the 2026–27 season.

His comments attracted considerable attention and raised questions about his relationship with the club’s management, particularly as his current contract approaches its final months.

In a statement shared on social media, Martínez acknowledged that his frustration following the defeat had influenced his public comments.

He explained that the meeting allowed both sides to discuss their concerns and clarify their positions.

The defender apologised for the timing and manner of his criticism, acknowledging that his remarks had not helped maintain unity within the club.

Martínez also expressed confidence that United’s management, coaching staff and players remained committed to restoring the team’s competitive standing.

He said the matter had been addressed internally and that attention had returned to improving performances and securing positive results.

The development comes amid a difficult period for Manchester United, who have reportedly gone five consecutive matches without a victory.

The team’s defensive performances have attracted scrutiny, with United struggling to keep clean sheets during the opening months of the campaign.

Injuries to several defensive players have also complicated Carrick’s preparations, increasing the importance of having experienced defenders available for selection.

United are scheduled to face Leeds United in their next Premier League fixture, with attention now turning to whether Martínez will retain his place in the starting lineup.

Although the defender has publicly indicated that the disagreement has been resolved, the club has yet to announce whether any disciplinary action will follow his initial comments.

Martínez’s apology represents an attempt to restore harmony within the squad as Manchester United seek to reverse their disappointing run of results.
