Former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Omatseye Nesiama, has secured another major continental assignment after being selected for the prestigious World Athletics and Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Mentoring Programme for Referees.

Nesiama, a retired military officer, will participate in the programme during the 2026 African Championships scheduled to be held in Accra from May 10 to 19.

The appointment is being viewed as further recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in athletics officiating and technical administration across the continent.

According to an official invitation jointly signed by World Athletics and the Confederation of African Athletics, the mentoring initiative is aimed at strengthening the capacity of Technical Officials through practical experience, educational sessions, and on-site mentoring at one of Africa’s biggest athletics events.

The programme will also feature the participation of a World Athletics Gold Referee, who will mentor selected officials in areas including competition preparation, organisation, and event delivery.

Under the arrangement, World Athletics will sponsor Nesiama’s international flight ticket, while the CAA will provide accommodation throughout his stay in Ghana.

The former AFN Technical Director is expected to play an active role during the championships while participating in specialised mentoring and educational sessions alongside other experienced officials from across Africa.

Nesiama recently officiated at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, further reinforcing his growing reputation within global athletics officiating circles.

According to reports, his latest appointment showcases his standing as one of Nigeria’s most respected athletics administrators and technical experts, having contributed significantly to the growth and development of track and field in the country over the years.
