The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed officers of the Rivers State Police Command to strengthen accountability, improve public engagement and uphold citizens’ fundamental rights ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Disu gave the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting with the command’s management and officers in Port Harcourt, where discussions focused on operational challenges, public complaints, professional conduct and security preparations for the forthcoming elections.

The police chief emphasised the importance of maintaining public confidence in law enforcement, urging officers to respond promptly to complaints and ensure that their actions reflect professionalism, fairness and respect for the rule of law.

He stressed that effective policing required sustained communication between security personnel and the communities they serve, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.

Disu also charged the command to strengthen its relationship with community leaders and other relevant stakeholders to improve intelligence gathering, prevent security threats and promote peaceful electoral activities.

According to him, accountability and respect for fundamental human rights remain essential to building public confidence and ensuring that police officers discharge their responsibilities without compromising established professional standards.

Speaking at the meeting, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing crime and maintaining public order across the state.

Adepoju assured the Inspector-General that officers would continue to enforce the law impartially while respecting the dignity and constitutional rights of residents.

He urged personnel to demonstrate courage, discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, noting that responsible conduct was necessary to strengthen the relationship between the police and the public.

The commissioner further pledged that the command would intensify efforts to address security challenges, improve its response to public complaints and maintain an environment conducive to peaceful political participation.

The meeting formed part of efforts to reinforce operational readiness and professional standards within the Rivers State Police Command ahead of the 2027 general elections.
