The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved an upward review of the feeding allocation for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members during their orientation programme, with implementation expected to begin in 2027.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during an interaction with 2026 Batch C Stream One corps members at the orientation camp in Obubra, Cross River State.

Nafiu said the Budget Office had been notified of the adjustment, although he did not disclose the new allocation or the percentage increase.

He explained that the revised provision was expected to take effect next year as part of efforts to improve the welfare of corps members during orientation.

The director-general also encouraged corps members to adopt responsible financial habits, avoid unnecessary expenditure and develop a culture of saving.

Addressing security concerns, Nafiu advised corps members to prioritise their personal safety, particularly when travelling between states.

He cautioned against travelling after 6 p.m. and recommended that those undertaking long journeys make arrangements to stop at safe locations and continue the following day.

He also discouraged corps members from sleeping at filling stations or gathering in unsecured public places while travelling.

According to him, corps members facing security threats should seek assistance from nearby police stations, military formations or offices of the Department of State Services (DSS), while also contacting the NYSC emergency hotline.

On infrastructure development, Nafiu pledged to strengthen engagement with relevant stakeholders to improve facilities at the Obubra Orientation Camp.

He further urged corps members to take advantage of the NYSC skills acquisition programme to develop practical abilities that could support self-employment and financial independence after their service year.

The director-general identified cosmetology, traditional hairstyling and other vocational activities as potential areas for entrepreneurship.

Earlier, the NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, welcomed the director-general and commended his attention to the welfare of corps members.

Presenting an update on camp activities, Oyenuga disclosed that 1,064 corps members had registered for the orientation programme.

She said the participants had adjusted to the camp’s structured activities and were participating in the various programmes organised to prepare them for national service.

The newly approved feeding allocation is expected to improve meal provision at orientation camps when implementation begins in 2027.
