India’s main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, has organised a protest march towards the Supreme Court in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of irregularities in the country’s electoral process.

The party sought to submit a memorandum calling for Kumar’s removal amid growing controversy over revisions to electoral registers and concerns about the credibility of the election management system.

The opposition alleges that the electoral-roll revision exercise has resulted in the removal of millions of eligible voters, raising questions about transparency, voter participation and the administration of elections.

According to reports, the revision affected approximately 130 million voter records, although the precise number of eligible voters removed and the basis for the figure require independent verification.

Chief Justice Surya Kant reportedly declined a request to meet opposition representatives, citing ongoing judicial proceedings concerning the electoral-roll revision.

The decision means that the legal questions surrounding the exercise remain before the courts, where the parties are expected to present their arguments.

The protest followed demonstrations in New Delhi during which police reportedly detained numerous participants.

Among those reportedly detained were members of the satirical Cockroach Janta Party and left-wing student organisations, which had joined calls for greater accountability in the electoral process.

The Congress party maintains that the concerns surrounding voter registration require urgent attention and has continued to demand the election chief’s resignation.

However, the allegations of electoral fraud remain contested, and the protest demands do not constitute judicial findings against Kumar or the Election Commission.

The controversy has intensified political debate over voter registration procedures, electoral transparency and the independence of institutions responsible for conducting elections in India.
