The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to carry out essential rehabilitation, resurfacing and extension works.
The proposed closure is tentatively scheduled to commence on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation following consultations with relevant stakeholders.
FAAN disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday, October 8, by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.
According to the authority, the intervention has become necessary following the deterioration of sections of the airport’s runway, raising concerns about operational safety.
Agbebire explained that the affected sections had developed potholes and extensive surface cracks, which were further aggravated by recent heavy rainfall.
He said the planned rehabilitation would involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of damaged sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.

The project is also expected to improve the airport’s readiness for increased passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas travel season.
Beyond the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, FAAN disclosed that the project would include extending the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as aviation activities in the South-East continue to expand.
The authority explained that the expansion would improve the airport’s operational capacity, enhance passenger comfort and support more efficient flight operations.
The proposed shutdown is expected to affect scheduled commercial flights and other aviation activities at the airport during the construction period.
FAAN consequently advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri within the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their respective airlines for information on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.
The authority also assured airport users that consultations with relevant stakeholders would continue before the final closure and reopening dates were announced.
It emphasised that the intervention was part of its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations across Nigeria.
Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport serves Owerri and surrounding communities in Imo State, providing an important aviation connection for travellers and businesses in the South-East.

The planned rehabilitation comes ahead of the festive season, when passenger movement to the region traditionally increases.
FAAN appealed for the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines and other airport users, stressing that the temporary disruption was necessary to improve runway safety and strengthen the airport’s capacity.
The authority said further announcements would be made once the closure arrangements and reopening schedule had been finalised.
