The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Chidera Eleh, popularly known as “Timaya,” over his alleged involvement in a series of robberies targeting Point-of-Sale (POS) operators and other residents in Awka, the state capital.
The suspect, described by the police as an ex-convict, was apprehended on Friday, October 9, during an intelligence-led operation targeting individuals suspected of carrying out robberies using motorcycles.
The command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday.
Ikenga explained that the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to combat robbery and other criminal activities across the state, particularly incidents involving suspects operating on motorcycles.
According to the police, operatives recovered a motorcycle, an axe, a cutlass and other items suspected to be connected with the alleged offences.
The command said the recovered items would form part of ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the reported robberies.

Ikenga disclosed that Eleh remained in police custody while investigators worked to determine the extent of his alleged involvement and identify other individuals who might have participated in the incidents.
The police spokesperson added that further developments would be communicated as investigations progressed.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and combating criminal activities across the state.
Ama assured residents that the police would continue intelligence-led operations aimed at identifying suspects, preventing criminal activities and ensuring that offenders were brought before the law.
He also urged members of the public, particularly POS operators, commercial motorcycle riders and business owners, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station.

The commissioner emphasised the importance of public cooperation in providing timely information that could assist security operatives in preventing and investigating criminal incidents.
The command has not disclosed the number of robbery incidents allegedly linked to the suspect or whether other individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
Investigations remain ongoing, and the allegations against Eleh have not been determined by a court.
