At least 24 people, including four children, have been killed after Russia launched a major wave of missiles and drones across Ukraine, hitting Kyiv and several other regions overnight into Wednesday.

About 60 people were initially reported injured, although later figures from Ukrainian authorities indicated the number of casualties continued to rise as emergency operations progressed.

The deadliest strike was recorded in Pryluky, in the northern Chernihiv region, where authorities said a missile hit a residential building, killing at least 18 people.

Four children were among those killed in Pryluky, while dozens of others were injured as emergency workers searched the damaged building.

Other deaths were reported in Kyiv, Kremenchuk and Oleksandriia, while residential buildings, industrial facilities and infrastructure were damaged across several regions.

The attack came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said intelligence officials had detected preparations for a large-scale Russian assault.

Ukrainian authorities said air-defence systems intercepted many of the incoming missiles and drones but were unable to stop the entire barrage, with ballistic missiles continuing to pose a major challenge.

Zelenskyy renewed calls for additional air-defence systems, particularly Patriot missiles, to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to counter ballistic attacks.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces carried out a large-scale strike against Ukrainian facilities linked to the production and storage of missiles and drones. Moscow also said it targeted port and ship-repair infrastructure.

Ukraine, meanwhile, continued long-range attacks against targets inside Russia.

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces struck oil facilities and a military training site in Russia’s Perm, Samara and Astrakhan regions.

Ukraine also reported an operation in the Black Sea near Sochi, where a vessel was seen on fire, although details surrounding the incident remained unclear.

The latest attacks mark another escalation in the continuing exchange of long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine, with civilian areas and critical infrastructure again suffering significant damage.
