The Nigerian judiciary has commenced its 31st Annual Sports Competition in Akwa Ibom State Capital with a call for stronger staff welfare and institutional cohesion.

Declaring the event open, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, said the annual competition has continued to play a vital role in strengthening the bond, health, and productivity of judicial workers.

The CJN, represented by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam, Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Calabar Division, described the sports festival as more than a recreational engagement, noting that it reflects the core values that drive the judiciary: teamwork, resilience, fairness, integrity, and respect.

“It is my honour and privilege to join you on this auspicious occasion of the opening ceremony of the annual Judiciary Sports Competition organised by the National Sports Association for the Judiciary (NASAJ)”. Justice Kekere-Ekun said.

The Chief Justice emphasised that while the judiciary is commonly viewed through its constitutional responsibilities, interpreting laws, resolving disputes, and safeguarding citizens’ rights, the wellness and commitment of its workforce remain essential to the proper functioning of the justice system.

“Today’s event serves as an important reminder that the strength of the judiciary rests not only on its judicial officers, but equally on the vitality and commitment of its staff, who keep the wheels of justice turning every day,” she stated. “Sports nurture wellbeing, camaraderie, discipline, strategic thinking, and healthy competition.”

Justice Kekere-Ekun commended NASAJ for its steadfast efforts in promoting unity and welfare within the judiciary, and appreciated Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State for hosting the competition and sustaining strong support for the state’s judiciary.

In her welcome remarks, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, expressed gratitude to God for ensuring the safety of officials and participants.

She assured organisers of the availability of standard sporting facilities at the Uyo Township Stadium to ensure a successful and healthy competition, while also thanking Governor Eno for his continuous support.
