At least one hundred and thirty-nine persons have been arraigned before the Sanitation Court in Uyo for allegedly violating the movement restriction imposed during the June environmental sanitation exercise in Akwa Ibom State.

The defaulters were arrested between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday for allegedly failing to comply with the restriction of movement and neglecting to participate in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

They appeared before the Presiding Magistrate, Amanda Effiom, on charges brought under the Akwa Ibom State Public Health Law.

The defendants were accused of violating Section 4(m) of the Akwa Ibom State Public Health Law, Cap. 119, Volume 5 of 2022, an offence punishable under Section 38 of the same law.

The enforcement exercise was carried out by the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, AKSEPWMA, as part of efforts to ensure compliance with environmental sanitation regulations across the state.

The agency, led by Obong Prince Ikim, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable Akwa Ibom through strict enforcement of sanitation laws.
