Portugal’s football authorities are reportedly preparing to hold talks with Cristiano Ronaldo next week in an effort to resolve the dispute surrounding his departure from the national team camp and clarify his international future.

The Portuguese Football Federation is seeking to ease tensions and prevent the disagreement from bringing Ronaldo’s record-breaking international career to an abrupt end.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp on September 30 following discussions with federation president Pedro Proença and developments involving national team coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old subsequently said he would explain the reasons for his departure at an appropriate time but stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football.

His exit followed his omission from Portugal’s starting lineup and growing uncertainty over his role under Jesus.

Reports said Jesus and Proença attempted to persuade Ronaldo to remain with the squad before his departure, but the forward ultimately left camp.

Portugal’s football authorities are now reportedly seeking a resolution that would allow the captain’s future with the national team to be decided without the dispute overshadowing his long international career.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most-capped player and all-time leading international goalscorer.

The planned discussions are expected to focus on resolving the issues surrounding his departure and determining whether he will continue representing Portugal.

For now, no permanent international retirement has been formally announced by Ronaldo or confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation.
