The Nigerian Navy says its personnel have uncovered about 85,000 litres of substance suspected to be stolen crude oil at an alleged illegal refining site in the Allison area of Rivers State.
The discovery was made on Tuesday by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, Bonny, following intelligence indicating an attempt to establish a new illegal oil bunkering and refining site in the area.
According to the Navy, troops deployed to the location discovered 16 concealed pits allegedly connected to illegal crude oil activities.
Four of the pits were said to contain an estimated 40,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil, while three others contained approximately 45,000 litres reportedly awaiting processing.
Hoses suspected to have been used to transport crude oil were also discovered at the site.
The Navy said the operation followed another intervention in the same area about a week earlier, during which security personnel deactivated an illegal refining camp.
It said the latest discovery indicated attempts by suspected illegal operators to re-establish crude oil processing activities in the area.
The Navy said its personnel would continue operations aimed at preventing the rebuilding of illegal refining sites and combating crude oil theft and related activities in Rivers State.
