The Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Emem Coffie, has urged young people to prioritise education and skills acquisition rather than abandon learning in pursuit of quick success.
Coffie made the call while speaking with journalists on Wednesday, warning that the growing perception that education is a waste of time could undermine youth development and professional advancement.
The civil engineer said formal education remained important in building professional competence, particularly in specialised and technical fields.
He, however, stressed that university education should not be regarded as the only pathway to success, calling for greater government support for vocational training, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship and other trades.
Coffie said young people should be supported to identify their talents early and acquire skills relevant to their chosen careers.
He also advocated structured apprenticeship programmes under which trainees could receive financial support while acquiring practical skills.
On employment, the PDP candidate called for greater industrialisation in Akwa Ibom State, arguing that skills development should be linked to industries capable of creating sustainable jobs.
He identified oil and gas, refining, gas processing, steel production and small-scale industries among sectors with the potential to generate employment.
Coffie also advocated the establishment of cottage industries across local government areas to utilise locally available resources, create jobs and increase incomes.
He called for stronger support for small and medium-sized businesses, including access to affordable financing for traders and entrepreneurs seeking to expand their operations.
Coffie said his proposed development agenda would focus on human capital development, industrialisation, skills acquisition and support for small businesses.
He also called for the continuation of viable long-term development projects in Akwa Ibom, arguing that infrastructure development should be accompanied by industries and businesses capable of creating jobs and improving livelihoods.
