Yeni Kuti, co-manager of the New Afrika Shrine and daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, says Felabration has become a platform for promoting Nigerian culture while celebrating her father’s life and legacy.
She made the remarks in an interview with the media in Lagos ahead of the 2026 edition of the annual festival, scheduled for October.
The week-long programme will feature several cultural activities, beginning with an art competition on October 1 at the Kalakuta Museum. A dance competition will follow on October 3 at the New Afrika Shrine, while school debates are scheduled for October 7.
The “Dress Fela” fashion show is billed for October 10, ahead of the main festival, which will run from October 12 to October 18.
Kuti said Felabration has continued to attract international visitors, particularly people of African descent from the diaspora, to the New Afrika Shrine.
She described the influx as positive, saying it allows visitors to experience and learn about Nigerian culture.
“If you come to the Shrine, you see people from all over the world. I’m glad that we are doing it and we are promoting our culture,” she said.
Felabration was conceived by Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti in 1998 and has since developed into an annual celebration featuring music, debates, dance, art and fashion, centred on Fela’s life, music and cultural legacy.
