A Pennsylvania doctor has died, and his wife remains critically injured after an intruder allegedly broke into their home and attacked the couple while they slept, authorities have said.
Dr Idris Evans, 46, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was attacked alongside his wife at their home in Edgewood early Thursday.
Allegheny County Police said officers responded to the residence at about 12:30 a.m. and found the couple seriously injured.
Both were taken to the hospital, where Evans was pronounced dead. His wife remained in critical condition.
Police identified 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway as the suspect and charged him with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.
According to court documents, Evans’ wife told investigators that she and her husband woke to find a man attacking them in their bedroom.
She also alleged that the attacker, who was wearing only underwear, made statements about “being God” during the incident.
The couple’s children, aged eight and 12, escaped from the house unharmed and sought help from a neighbour.
Police later located Hemingway behind a nearby residence and took him into custody.
Investigators said Hemingway allegedly entered the house through an open window before reaching the area where the couple was sleeping.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether the suspect and Evans knew each other before the incident.
Evans served as a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and was also an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
UPMC and the university described Evans as a dedicated caregiver and valued member of their communities while expressing condolences to his family, colleagues and loved ones.
