Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Matthew Kukah, has urged Nigerians to scrutinise candidates ahead of the 2027 general election, telling voters, particularly young people, to make informed choices at the polls.
Kukah spoke on Friday on the sidelines of the 70th anniversary celebration of Saint Finbarr’s College, where he stressed that citizens also bear responsibility for the quality of leaders they elect.
“This is what I encourage young people: please vote to stay alive,” Kukah said.
The cleric encouraged voters to research the backgrounds and records of candidates seeking public office, including using information available online to inform their decisions.
Kukah said Nigerians could hold the Independent National Electoral Commission, government and security agencies accountable for their respective roles in the electoral process, but maintained that voters must also take responsibility for the choices they make.
“But we are all largely responsible for the nature of the choices that we make, because as I said, we are not as innocent as we think we are,” he said.
He stressed that citizens should carefully assess those seeking their votes rather than make electoral choices without adequate information.
His remarks come as political parties and candidates intensify preparations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
