No fewer than 15 people were killed in separate attacks by suspected terrorists in parts of Plateau State on Sunday night, with nine of the victims reportedly among passengers travelling to Jos.
The attacks occurred in Dungus community in Jos South Local Government Area, Vodni in Pushit District of Mangu Local Government Area and Tahoos in Riyom Local Government Area.
The deadliest incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. at Dungus, where suspected attackers reportedly opened fire on a vehicle conveying passengers to Jos.
A spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, who confirmed the incident, said nine passengers were killed in the attack.
He said some of the passengers initially survived the shooting but later died from their injuries while receiving treatment at hospitals.
Among those reportedly killed was a member of Operation Rainbow, a Plateau-based security outfit.
Tengwong described the incident as a serious loss of life and said some other victims sustained gunshot wounds and remained in medical facilities.
A resident, Musa Dauda, also confirmed that several injured passengers were taken to hospital following the attack, adding that some later died while receiving treatment.
In Mangu Local Government Area, suspected terrorists reportedly attacked Vodni in Pushit District during the same night, killing two people.
Four other victims sustained gunshot injuries in the attack and were receiving treatment at a hospital in Mangu town.
Another attack was reported in Tahoos, Riyom Local Government Area, where two people were reportedly killed around the same period.
The latest incidents have added to continuing security concerns in Plateau State, where communities in several local government areas have experienced recurring attacks and killings.
The attacks also underscore the vulnerability of travellers using roads linking rural communities with Jos, particularly at night.
As of the time of filing the report, the Plateau State Police Command spokesman, Alabo Alfred, and the Media Officer of Operation Enduring Peace, Chinonso Oteh, had not responded to enquiries seeking official confirmation of the incidents, casualty figures and details of ongoing security operations.
The identities of the attackers and their motives had also not been officially established.
