The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has directed the Ministry of Environment to urgently remove heaps of refuse from major roads across the state.
Egbedun also ordered the clearing of blocked and neglected drainages and waterways, calling for a sustained and coordinated approach to environmental sanitation and waste management.
The directive was issued on Tuesday during a meeting between members of the House and the Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin, alongside senior officials of the ministry.
The meeting formed part of the Assembly’s oversight activities, with a focus on environmental sanitation and effective waste management across the state.
Egbedun stressed the need for immediate action to address the accumulation of refuse and blocked drainage channels, noting that functional drainage systems were essential to preventing flooding and protecting lives and property.
He further directed the ministry and relevant agencies to ensure the proper evacuation and disposal of waste, particularly in major towns and cities, markets, residential communities and other public spaces.
The Speaker said waste management should not be limited to occasional sanitation exercises but should become a continuous and properly coordinated responsibility of government agencies.
He also called for regular cleaning of major streets, public spaces and other areas requiring government attention.
Egbedun assured residents that the Assembly would continue to exercise its oversight functions to ensure that government agencies respond effectively to environmental challenges.
He noted that a clean environment was essential to public health, economic activities and the general well-being of residents.
Responding, Adejoorin and heads of relevant agencies briefed the lawmakers on the ministry’s ongoing activities, challenges and interventions aimed at improving environmental sanitation in the state.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has also been working on its first Climate Action Plan, which is expected to provide guidance for government, businesses and households on measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The state governor’s Consultant on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development, Chinwe Obuaku, said the plan would also help strengthen efforts to protect the environment from the effects of climate change.
Obuaku said work on the plan began in 2023 following the creation of an Advisory Council by the governor and the state’s participation at the COP28 climate conference.
She added that the document was expected to be forwarded to the state House of Assembly for adoption.
