Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk has been acquitted of all charges in a federal murder-for-hire case over an alleged revenge killing in Los Angeles.
The 33-year-old rapper, whose real name is Durk Banks, was accused of orchestrating and financing an ambush intended to kill rival rapper Quando Rondo in August 2022.
Prosecutors alleged that Banks ordered the attack in retaliation for the 2020 killing of his close associate, Dayvon “King Von” Bennett, by an associate of Rondo.
The intended target survived, but his 24-year-old cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, was killed in a hail of gunfire at a petrol station near the Beverly Centre shopping mall.
Banks’ defence maintained that he was not involved in the plot, arguing that a former personal assistant had arranged the attack in an attempt to impress him.
Two co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey, were also acquitted of murder-for-hire-related charges but were convicted of conspiracy to commit stalking and other stalking-related offences.
Despite his acquittal, Banks remains in custody and faces a separate federal trial scheduled for October 5 on murder-related racketeering and weapons charges. His two co-defendants are also expected to face trial on those counts.
Banks, who won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his song “All My Life,” was arrested at a Florida airport in October 2024 after other suspects had been charged in the case.
