Katsina State has launched a $1 million climate-resilience project aimed at protecting farming communities from floods, drought, soil degradation and post-harvest losses.
The 12-month programme, titled “Protecting Food Security Against Recurring Floods and Drought,” will be implemented initially in Bindawa, Bakori and Kafur local government areas by Mercy Corps Nigeria in partnership with the Katsina State Government.
Governor Dikko Radda, who launched the initiative in Katsina on Thursday, said climate change posed a major threat to the state’s agricultural economy and required coordinated action to protect food production and livelihoods.
The project will focus on improving climate adaptation among smallholder farmers through measures including soil conservation, water management, improved storage facilities and climate-smart farming practices.
Mercy Corps Nigeria said the intervention would construct soil bunds, contour barriers and drainage systems across selected farms, rehabilitate solar-powered water systems and support land restoration programmes.
The programme will also rehabilitate 150 food storage facilities, distribute improved storage bags and provide training to farmers on reducing post-harvest losses.
Officials said the project would support vulnerable groups including women, youths, persons with disabilities and households affected by climate-related challenges.
Katsina, one of Nigeria’s major agricultural states, has faced increasing pressure from extreme weather conditions affecting farming communities and food production.
