The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man, Ilegbami Jacob, for allegedly defrauding a businessman by claiming to be a cocoa farmer.

Jacob is accused of collecting N36 million from Sunday Adegboyo, promising to supply 5.5 tons of cocoa beans, but failing to deliver. The suspect reportedly fled after giving false assurances that the goods would come from Taraba State.

According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, police acted after a petition from the victim and tracked Jacob to his hideout in Akure with the help of the Scorpion Squad.

“The suspect will be charged in court when investigations are concluded,” Ayanlade said, adding that the police remain committed to cracking down on fraud and protecting legitimate businesses in the state.

CP Adebowale Lawal, Commissioner of Police, urged business owners to verify the credibility of partners before large financial transactions, saying vigilance is the first line of defense against fraud.

This is not an isolated case. In May, a Lagos Special Offences Court in Ikeja remanded businessman Moruf Gbadamosi for allegedly obtaining over N23 million under false pretence. He was arraigned alongside his company, Greenbil Mega Ocean Limited, by the EFCC.
