A Chinese national has been rescued alive from a tunnel in Nepal, 10 days after a devastating Himalayan disaster involving ice, rock and mud killed more than 1,300 people and left thousands missing.
The man, identified by Nepalese authorities as Lu Haitao, was found inside a 225-metre tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa district. Rescue teams from Nepal and foreign specialists worked to reach him after he became trapped following the disaster.
Officials said Lu was in a stable condition after being brought out of the tunnel, although he showed signs of mild hypothermia. He was later evacuated for medical attention.
The rescue came as emergency teams continued searching through the aftermath of the August 26 disaster, which was triggered by a major collapse of ice, rock and debris in the Himalayan region. The disaster caused widespread destruction, damaging communities and infrastructure across parts of Nepal and the surrounding area.
Before Lu’s rescue, two Nepalese workers had also been pulled alive from another tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station, raising hopes among families still waiting for news of missing relatives.
Authorities said rescue operations have focused on hydropower facilities where hundreds of workers were believed to have been trapped. International teams from several countries have joined Nepal’s search efforts as crews continue clearing debris and flooded tunnels.
The disaster has left more than 1,300 people dead and thousands missing, according to officials, with rescue teams continuing efforts to locate survivors and recover victims.
The latest rescues have provided renewed hope amid one of the deadliest natural disasters to hit the Himalayan region in recent years.
