A United States judge has said he must declare a mistrial in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict following several days of deliberations.
Judge William Sullivan of a Massachusetts court delayed the formal declaration briefly to allow Clancy’s defence team to file an emergency appeal seeking more time for the jury to continue discussions.
Clancy, 36, is accused of killing her three young children — Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months — in January 2023. She admitted to causing their deaths, but her lawyers argued that she was not criminally responsible at the time because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
The defence maintained that Clancy experienced a severe mental health crisis that affected her ability to understand her actions, while prosecutors argued that the killings were planned and that she understood the consequences of what she was doing.
The jury had spent more than a week reviewing evidence and hearing arguments before informing the court that it remained unable to reach a unanimous decision. Efforts by the judge to encourage further deliberations did not resolve the disagreement.
The case has attracted national attention in the United States, with discussions surrounding postpartum mental health, criminal responsibility and how the justice system handles cases involving claims of severe psychiatric illness.
A mistrial means the case ends without a verdict. Prosecutors may decide to retry the case before a new jury, depending on further legal decisions.
