The 2026 summer Premier League transfer window has closed, with clubs finalising late deals after another record-breaking period of spending.
Manchester City completed one of the biggest moves of the window by signing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez for £125 million, a fee that places the Argentina international among the joint-most expensive Premier League signings in history.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in February 2023 for a then British-record £107 million, has signed a five-year contract with Manchester City and will reunite with manager Enzo Maresca.
The midfielder said he was excited to join City and expressed his desire to help the club keep competing for major trophies.
The transfer contributed to a record-breaking summer for English football, with Premier League clubs spending a combined £3.41 billion, making it the second consecutive summer in which a new spending record was set.
Several other major deals were completed before the deadline, including Jack Grealish’s move to Everton and Mykhailo Mudryk’s loan switch to Tottenham.
Manchester City also strengthened their squad with the signing of Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye, while Sunderland moved closer to completing a deal for Malick Fofana.
Crystal Palace completed the permanent signing of former Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell from Strasbourg, adding another player to their defensive options.
Brighton also announced the arrival of Stuttgart midfielder Chema Andres for a reported £15.5 million fee. The 21-year-old Spain Under-21 international signed a five-year contract after previously developing through Real Madrid’s academy.
Despite the official closure of the transfer window, some deals remain possible where clubs submitted the required documentation, known as a deal sheet, before the deadline.
Everton’s move for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun remained ongoing after the club submitted a deal sheet before the deadline, allowing additional time to complete the formalities.
Manchester United were among the clubs that failed to complete late targets, including their attempted move for Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri and Leicester City midfielder Louis Page.
The closing stages of the window saw clubs across the Premier League and English Football League complete final negotiations as teams prepared their squads for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.
