Authorities in Germany have launched an investigation after the power grid in the eastern state of Brandenburg was targeted in what officials described as a suspected sabotage attack, following damage to electricity infrastructure caused by explosive devices.

Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann said incendiary devices were used against power lines near the Turnow-Preilack substation, a key electricity hub connected to the Jaenschwalde power plant and the 50Hertz transmission network.

According to officials, specially designed rockets containing conductive materials were fired into extra-high-voltage lines, resulting in two short circuits. Investigators also discovered additional devices at the scene, with authorities continuing searches as the number of recovered items increased.

The attack briefly disrupted electricity operations, but grid operator 50Hertz said all affected power lines had been restored and the wider electricity supply was not impacted.

The operator of the Jaenschwalde power plant, LEAG, said the incident triggered an automatic shutdown of one unit at the facility, with restoration work expected to return operations to normal.

Redmann said authorities were examining several possible explanations for the attack and did not rule out involvement by foreign actors or groups previously linked to attacks on energy infrastructure.

The incident has renewed concerns in Germany over the protection of critical infrastructure, including electricity networks and transport facilities, amid what officials have described as increasing risks from cyber and hybrid threats.

German authorities have recently increased attention on infrastructure security following a series of incidents involving suspected attacks on strategic facilities.

The investigation into the Brandenburg power grid incident remains ongoing as security agencies work to identify those responsible and determine the motive behind the attack.
