Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has led serving and retired senior police officers in paying tribute to former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon E. Arase, one year after his death, with renewed calls for improved welfare and institutional support for retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu spoke at a public lecture organised in honour of the late Arase, who died on August 31, 2025.
The lecture, themed “Policing, Good Governance, and National Development: The Strategic Role of Police Veterans in Building a Secure Nigeria,” brought together former Inspectors-General of Police, retired senior officers, serving personnel and other prominent dignitaries.
In his tribute, IGP Disu described the late Arase as a distinguished police leader whose understanding of policing was rooted in the protection of lives, respect for human dignity and the building of public confidence in the Force.
He said Arase’s contributions to policing extended beyond his years in active service, describing him as a man of service, intellect, integrity, humanity and sacrifice.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Police Veterans’ Foundation, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Yesufu, described the late police chief as an exceptional leader whose commitment to the welfare of retired officers led to the establishment of the Foundation.
Yesufu called for the creation of a dedicated Veterans Affairs Department within the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen support for retired officers and ensure they benefit from relevant government programmes.
The National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, Chief Mrs Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, also commended the late Arase for his humanitarian contributions, particularly his scholarship support for children of fallen police officers and efforts to address the socio-economic challenges facing retired personnel.
Former Inspectors-General of Police Sunday Ehindero and Mohammed Abubakar were among prominent personalities who attended the event.
Discussions at the lecture focused on policing, good governance, national development and the need to strengthen the Police Veterans’ Foundation into a sustainable institution for retired officers.
The event ended with the presentation of awards to beneficiaries, including the widow of the late former IGP, Mrs Agharese Arase.
The Nigeria Police Force says it remains committed to honouring serving and retired officers who have contributed to national security and the development of the Force.
