Bayern Munich began the defence of their Bundesliga title in impressive fashion on Friday, defeating Stuttgart 5-1 at the Allianz Arena.
Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring for Bayern in the 21st minute, heading Joshua Kimmich’s corner across goal to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Stuttgart goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow made several saves to keep his side in the game before Josha Vagnoman levelled the score seven minutes after the restart.
However, Bayern quickly regained control as Michael Olise restored their lead in the 55th minute after Kimmich found him with a through ball.
Two minutes later, Stuttgart suffered another setback when Vagnoman accidentally turned Alphonso Davies’ cross into his own net to make it 3-1.
Olise appeared to have added another goal after receiving a pass from Harry Kane, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
Bayern continued to dominate and added a fourth goal in the 82nd minute through Aleksandar Pavlovic, who finished after unselfish play from substitute Ismael Saibari.
Saibari, who joined Bayern from PSV Eindhoven during the summer for a reported £43 million, then provided the assist for Luis Diaz to score Bayern’s fifth goal in stoppage time.
The victory gives Vincent Kompany’s side a strong start to their Bundesliga title defence.
Bayern have now won both of their competitive matches this season after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the German Super Cup last week.
The Bavarians will now look to maintain their winning run as they continue their campaign to retain the Bundesliga title.
