The newly inaugurated President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, has vowed to sanction lawyers who use abusive or insulting language against their colleagues on social media.
Badejo-Okusanya, who became the 33rd President of the NBA, made the declaration in her inaugural address at the 66th Annual General Conference of the association in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
She warned that her administration would have little tolerance for professional misconduct, particularly offensive exchanges among lawyers over political differences.
The NBA President expressed concern over the conduct of some legal practitioners on social media, saying lawyers who bring the profession into disrepute through abusive online exchanges would face disciplinary action.
She said offenders would be subjected to public proceedings, stressing that members of the legal profession are expected to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Bar.
Badejo-Okusanya also pledged to defend the independence of the judiciary while advocating reforms aimed at improving the justice system.
She called on lawyers to conduct themselves responsibly, particularly in public spaces and on social media, noting that the profession must maintain the confidence and respect of the public.
